about
The band recorded an earlier version of this song on our 2018 Oh Alright album. That album was driven almost completely by a response to powerful social justice movements of the day - the Dreamers (children of immigrants who entered the US illegally), the Me Too movement that raised the voices of women and their allies against the crimes of sexual assault, and Black Lives Matter- a movement that awakened so many to the brutal inequities of racial discrimination. In the first recording of the song, I wanted to call out and support each of those movements – to show solidarity.
Between that first recording of “Dreamy” and the second - my beautiful mother died after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. I wanted to revisit and rework the original version of the song, and going into the studio for the new album gave me the chance. I changed the title from the plural, group-oriented, “Dreamy Dreamers,” to the singular “Dreamy Dreamer.” Because change starts with each of us, individually, choosing to dream.
I love both versions – they reflect, for me at least, the way musical ideas can be freely explored, expanded, and shared. This “Dreamy Dreamer” is intimate and close – it’s the outstretched hand, the shoulder to lean on, the loving embrace.
lyrics
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your fight to believe
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your quest to believe
In Justice tempered by Compassion
Truth without Deceit
Where everyone can say without hesitation
Love is all that matters and
Power ain’t righteous when it’s ruled by Greed
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your fight to believe
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your quest to believe in Justice
I like people who dream in color
I like people who show they care
I like people who say I’m sorry
I didn’t know that I caused you so much pain
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your fight to believe
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your quest to believe
In Justice tempered by Compassion
Truth without Deceit
Where everyone can say without hesitation
Love is all that matters
Power ain’t righteous when it’s ruled by Greed
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your fight to believe
I stand with you
I stand with you
I stand with you
Make it real now
Make it real now
Make it real now
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your fight to believe
Dreamy dreamer, dreamy dreamer
I stand with you in your quest to believe
